“The fool says in his heart, ‘There is no God.’ They are corrupt, doing abominable iniquity; there is none who does good. God looks down from heaven on the children of man to see if there are any who understand, who seek after God. They have all fallen away; together they have become corrupt; there is none who does good, not even one. Have those who work evil no knowledge, who eat up my people as they eat bread, and do not call upon God? There they are, in great terror, where there is no terror! For God scatters the bones of him who encamps against you; you put them to shame, for God has rejected them. Oh, that salvation for Israel would come out of Zion! When God restores the fortunes of his people, let Jacob rejoice, let Israel be glad.” (v1-6)
This Psalm, which is nearly identical to Psalm 14, is a good reminder of just how foolish it is to disregard God’s sovereignty. Not only would we fail to receive eternal life, all of our works would be fruitless and we would fear when there is nothing to be feared (paranoia is an example of mental illness that could stem from a sin problem).
David does offer hope to those who do not yet know the Lord – they may call upon Him and be saved by the salvation that comes out of Zion. “For God alone my soul waits in silence; from him comes my salvation. He alone is my rock and my salvation, my fortress; I shall not be greatly shaken.” (Psa 62:1-2) All of our fears (including the fear of death) are able to be assuaged by the all-powerful creator God.
Father God, thank you for saving us – we are hopeless without Your promise of salvation. Thank you for Your scriptures, and more importantly, the living testimony of Jesus Christ, who embodied Your love and guidance to us. May we learn to cast all of our cares and fears upon You, the one who replaces all of our fears with His perfect love. In (of) this world we will have troubles, but we can take heart, for You have (and do) overcome this world and the things which we fear. May we fear you alone Father.
