“Help, Lord, for no one is faithful anymore; those who are loyal have vanished from the human race. Everyone lies to their neighbor; they flatter with their lips but harbor deception in their hearts. May the Lord silence all flattering lips and every boastful tongue – those who say, ‘By our tongues we will prevail; our own lips will defend us – who is lord over us?’ ‘Because the poor are plundered and the needy groan, I will now arise,’ says the Lord. ‘I will protect them from those who malign them.’ And the words of the Lord are flawless, like silver purified in a crucible, like gold refined seven times. You, Lord, will keep the needy safe and will protect us forever from the wicked, who freely strut about when what is vile is honored by the human race.” (v1-8)
I understand David’s despair – “Where have all the faithful people gone? Only the wicked remain. Seeing how your words and promises are without flaw, please God, deliver and protect us from the wicked, ignorant people who are falsely honored by those who value evil in this world.” (my par)
How has the overall culture become so twisted that it celebrates evil and shuns righteousness? Sin and rebellion have truly made a mess of this world. Wars, abortion, assisted suicide, and many other topics are constantly being promoted, despite being completely contrary to scripture and God’s heart for us.
I feel a righteous anger against these horrific moral normalities, and I am making a stand – not on a picket line, but on the Word of God. I have chosen to immerse myself in the Bible because I realize a deep, strong, immovable relationship with God is the only real solution for me, so that I don’t blindly wander down the trail of moral relativism. If God is our moral compass, then we will not likely fall prey to the culture’s ways.
“Yet I hold this against you: You have forsaken the love you had at first. Consider how far you have fallen! Repent and do the things you did at first. If you do not repent, I will come to you and remove your lampstand from its place. Whoever has ears, let them hear what the Spirit says to the churches. To the one who is victorious, I will give the right to eat from the tree of life, which is in the paradise of God.” (Rev 2:4,5,7)
I believe that God’s desire is for people to return to our first love, repent of our sins, and set the example for everyone around us. Now, I’m not suggesting that you are not already doing that, I’m encouraging you to encourage others to refocus on our first love. I believe that Jesus is the only solution to sin, and our role in this is to remain as Christlike as possible and share that good news with everyone whose ear we have.
