“Lord, our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth! You have set your glory in the heavens. When I consider your heavens, the work of your fingers, the moon and the stars, which you have set in place, what is mankind that you are mindful of them, human beings that you care for them? You have made them[d] a little lower than the angels and crowned them[f] with glory and honor. You made them rulers over the works of your hands; you put everything under their feet…” (v1,3-6)
My takeaway is a renewed sense of awe for how infinite God’s glory and majesty truly are – creating the earth, people, and all living things was not enough to show the depth of God’s glory; God also created galaxies, the sun, moon, planets, and countless stars so He could scratch the surface of showing us the depth of His power and creativity.
My human mind cannot fully comprehend infinity – I am so finite in every part of my being (mental capacity, skills, resources, etc.) that someone/something infinite is beyond the depth of my experience. God tried to show us just how infinite He is – not only His power and glory through creation, but His love, mercy and grace through Christ.
To paraphrase David’s Psalm in my own words: “When I consider your majesty and the vast display of your glory in all that you have created, I am blown away that you would still care for us lowly human beings. Yet you form us in your image, give us abundant mercy, grace, glory and honor, and put us in charge of over your creation. You are truly beyond compare.”
I encourage us to simply sit in God’s presence today, taking in His glory and and basking in His abundant love. Experience the joy of being God’s image bearer, crowned with His glory (like a prince/princess is crowned by their father the king), and know that you are loved more deeply than all of the stars in the heavens and the all of that creatures of the earth combined.
